My passion for art was kindled when I first saw Jon Gnagy's program LEARN TO DRAW on public television in the early 1950's. Mostly self-taught, I have used charcoal sketching and oil on canvas for most of my life. I was able to channel my love of art into a professional career as a dentist in Lexington Kentucky. Over a forty two year span I was able to master the use of light, shaping and color as I painted beautiful smiles for great patients. I have always used drawing and sketching as a means of communicating detail and esthetic concept to my patients.
It was a patient, a friend and a mentor, Lexington-based international equestrian artist, Andre Pater, who reignited my passion for painting. It was he that insisted I begin using a pastel media. It was through Andre that I discovered pastel could be bold.
My wife, Carole, and I split our time between Lexington Kentucky and Daufuskie Island South Carolina. We spend February on the beautiful tropical island, Anguilla British West Indies. We have been blessed to travel Europe on many occasions. This has allowed me to view magnificent art in the great museums and to acquire a portfolio of scenes that I may someday capture on canvas or pastel board.
While my heart is in the Bluegrass and Tuscany may capture my imagination, it is the spectacular vistas of the South Carolina low country and the pristine beaches of Anguilla that demands my attention. I remain mesmerized by what I see daily. It is with oil and pastel that I am able to revisit, capture and share the scenes that a Great God provides wherever I may travel.
